Istanbul - Saturday May 21, 2011

Saturday we worked on the sushi bar and red chandelier number two.

It was a bit tricky getting the sushi bar glass top, from two floors down in the parking garage, up to the room where the sushi bar is. The glass is very fragile and should not be bumped or touch the concrete floor that is was being stacked on down in the manager's office. The Turkish workmen were very helpful lifting and carefully moving the glass.

We staked the glass carefully around the edge of the room, and numbered the panels for inspection, to see which ones we will have to have replaced. Unfortunately, the hotel had unpacked the panels before our arrival, and five of the twelve pieces have some damage. Some will have to be replaced, and hopefully we can repair the others. Robert had specifically requested that these not be unpacked by the construction company, and that we would do this upon our arrival in Turkey.

How many men does it take to see how to put in the lighting . . . ?
Other workmen were putting up the mirror with the divan logo . . .
These are the glass gates at the opening of the sushi bar from the hallway. The glass has been put in back to front, or maybe the gates can be reversed, so that the finished side faces the hallway.
Jay and Kathy worked all day on chandelier number two. The completed the first tier, and most of the second tier. It was a warm day and very hot and sweaty work up on the scaffold.

This mother had her lap full on our bus ride back to the hotel. One sleeping daughter and one curious daughter.
Ali, a friend or Robert and Kathy's from Townshend, VT lives in Istanbul. She is teaching school here for three years, and this is the end of her second year. She gave us all sorts of hints of what to do and see in Istanbul and Turkey. (I think tomorrow we will go to one of the Prince's Islands and ride bikes around the car-less island. It is an hour's ferry ride south of Istanbul, and is supposed to be beautiful ~ our day off!)
We all tried new desserst . . . Rococo Cake for Luc . . .
