Delray Beach - Week 4 - January 28 - February 3, 2013

I know - yet another sunrise . . .
but this is my morning walking meditation, and I am getting my fix for
when I return to land-locked Vermont. They really do get more beautiful each morning!
See . . . I am here - walking the beach and getting my feet wet!
 What a light show!
I came across this race . . . I think it might have been the lifeguards training.
They had to run around the cones on the beach with their surf boards,
and the swim out and around the jet ski, and then back around the cones on the beach. They did this about 3 times, and it looked grueling!
But I am glad that they are fit to save swimmers in the ocean!

Tina decided on this fabric for the couch reupholstering.
We went out the shop and ordered the fabric! Hurray!
We like this fabric for possibly the head boards in the guest rooms.
We'll see if we get to this project!
 or this one . . .
As we were out and about, we decided to try Saquella Cafe for lunch, in Boca Raton.
We had to wait for a table as they were quite busy - a good sign!
We sat by this tower and watch the sky and shadows and birds . . .

Looking the other way to more shops and restaurants . . .
All the outdoor restaurants have water bowls for the canine friends
who come to sleep under the tables while their owners eat . . .
Crystal chandeliers under the awnings . . .
Cheers! Iced latte for Patty, and an iced tea for Tina!
We split a gorgonzola salad that was "simply devine", according to Tina!

 Tina finished her plate clean!
"Yummy rhymes with tummy. It would." Tina P.
 Gelato ~ Boca style . . .
And what is for dessert? No - we are just looking!
Although they have delicious croissants!
After our lunch, we did a walk around the block of shops to stretch our legs,
before getting back in the car. I love these banyan trees!
Saquella Cafe tower from the front . . .
Here is the chocolate lab that I see on the beach every other morning or so . . .
Very good boy who sits right down for a petting . . .
 Welcome to Lanikai Villas . . .
I realized I have not put any photos of our villa complex.
Main stairs up from the parking out back . . .
Looking east . . . houses around the pool and grass area . . .

Walking towards the pool . .
Jim painting the pool terrace . . .
 Inside Tina's house . . .
Having breakfast and reading her two daily papers . . .
And look at the new day-glow pink sneakers she picked out!
We decided to take a trip to "Aruba". . .
an outdoor restaurant in Fort Lauderdale by the Sea.
It was very windy, and the lettuce was blowing off our plates.
Tina almost lost her hat a few times . . .
And a bird did come down and take a French fry - Tina was hoping he would do it again!
And Tina LOVES key lime pie ~ this one was "devine."
On Thursday Dru arrived from Boston for the weekend.
We went to City Oyster in Delray Beach for dinner . . .
Tina had oysters . . .
And Dru ordered Truffled Parmigiano Fresh Handcut French Fries . . .
that were delicious!
I left Tina and Dru and headed off for the weekend.
I met up with Jean and June, but instead of yoga as Pam was not there,
we went for a swim at Jean's pool, then a walk on Deerfield Beach . . .
June rinsing off the sand after the walk on Deerfield Beach . . .

We decided to drive to Sanibel Island for the day on Saturday.
It is only about 3 hours away, so we got up early,
had some caffeine and headed west in Zelda!
Here are June & Jean leaving Jean's apartment in Deerfield Beach.
Zelda is packed and ready to go!
Welcome to the Swamp ~ stopped for gas, but no alligators in sight on Alligator Alley!
Lots of birds however nesting in the wetlands along the edge of the highway.
June & her faithful iPad taking photos!
Crossing over the causeway to Sanibel and Captiva Islands  . . . Gorgeous!
Zelda's driver . . . "ooh-ing" and "ah-ing" . . .
So "Grandma Dot's" was our first destination
to have some lunch before heading to shell . . .
They open at 11:30 and there is already a line for lunch before they opened!
Here comes our lunches - lots of FRIED food - fish and oysters and fries!
Next time - the currried lobster salad or scallops on a bed of spinach salad . . .
And an orchid to boot . . .
You can see the 3rd causeway bridge in the far distance that we had just come over . . .
We headed to the Bowman's Beach at the western end of Sanibel,
that was supposed to have less people . . .
According to Fordor's Bowman's Beach is one of Florida's best beaches . . .
(Thanks to Bedford I have a Fordor's Guide to Florida! Thanks Santa)
It was glorious, and lots of shells, however next time we will head at low tide . . .

Lot's of shell seekers sitting and picking . . .
Dog walkers . . .

We spent about 4-5 hours here,
walking the beach and looking at the shells & the water . . .

Then we headed to Captiva Island.
I would definitely stay out here . . . very remote feeling and beautiful.
We visited the Chapel-By-The-Sea . . .
And the beautiful cemetery . . .
I just love this cemetery ~
 Look at this grave!
"Forever by the Sea" . . . lucky Harriet!
Fading sunlight filtering through the trees . . .

And they we headed to watch the sun set into the ocean . . .
with all the others taking photos!
 BEAUTIFUL!
Everyone waiting for the "green flash" on the clear horizon . . .
I did not see it if there was one!
We headed home after a quick stop at a deli for a bite to eat . . .
It was a good day's trip!

  1. What a contrast!

Just came in from shoveling snow halfway to the street, meeting our high school senior who is "under contract for $10 a storm." He's losing money today - I think we'll change it to $10 each time he comes over to tackle another part of the snow shovel project. Bob measured the snow in a "level" spot - it was 23" - anyway it was over my knees and up to my hips in many places.
Now the sun has just come out and it's beautiful!
The next project is to find the cars - I think they are under lumpy humps of snow in the driveway.

Our neighbor couldn't open any of their doors, so his wife had to crawl out a downstairs window and shovel the doors free. Our side door opens onto the side porch, so we are able to leave and enter freely and now have a path to the street which has a foot or so of snow. Won't expect a plow until this evening.

Florida looks better and better with every shovelfull of snow! You must be having a great time exploring and dining with Tina. Glad you had a chance to visit with friends last weekend. The rowing sounds terrific, according to our phone conversation this morning. Looking forward to photos of you rowing with dolphins!

Tell Tina I could go for a piece of key lime pie right now! That looks delicious. Have another for me!

Give Tina a hug for us, even though I don't think we have ever met. and here's a hug for you, Patty --OOO

Thanks for keeping us up to date on the Florida sojourn.
